In the 2012 US Sumo Open, about 30 athletes from 7 countries competed in the open air plaza at JACCC. Some highlights include:
- Foreigners win gold in 6 out of 7 weight classes!
- Three-time World Sumo Champion Byambajav Ulambayar wins gold for an unprecedented 6th year in a row!!
- In his first tournament ever, Gene Eydelman wins the middleweight division with a 5-0 sweep!
- Polish siblings Marina, Aron, and Kewin Rozum go undefeated (except when the brothers face each other) in the women's and men's lightweight divisions!
- Canadian brothers Kodiak (middleweight), Brodi (heavyweight), and Kolton (lightweight) are another set of three siblings, who competed in three different weight classes.

The 2012 US Sumo Open returned to historic Little Tokyo. The tournament took place in Noguchi Plaza at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center (JACCC), a Little Tokyo landmark.
