SUMO TOURNEY #2 SUMMARY

Sumo Tournament #2 included some remarkable upsets and astounding performances. Many of the top competitors from the first tournament fought again, and female athletes competed as well.

The most incredible performance of the day was by Trent Sabo, the only lightweight athlete, who defeated not one, not two, not three, but all five of his middleweight and heavyweight opponents! This was a case of David vs. five Goliaths! At only 180 pounds, Trent used incredible speeed, strength, and technique to outmaneuver all of his larger opponents. In fact Trent went undefeated (5-0) in the opening rounds, while Troy Collins, the overall champion from the previous tournament was just 3-2. All the other big men had losing records after the opening round-robin! Trent proved that there's more to sumo than size!

Another standout was Mosi "Comeback" Humphrey, who started slow with a 2-3 early record. Mosi returned after intermission a new man, defeating all four opponents, on the way to both heavyweight and openweight titles. Although Trent beat Mosi in the early rounds, Mosi gave Trent his only loss of the day in the openweight final match.

The female sumo wrestlers, May Chung of Hong Kong, and Ashlee Irish, put on quite a show of their own. The ladies fought a total of 4 matches, involving intense grappling, as they invariably went for the belt. May Chung, at only 108 pounds, defeated the larger Ashlee in the first match, but Ashlee came back to defeat May in the second. The third dramatic bout was called a tie, paving the way for an epic struggle, in which Ashlee twisted at the edge of the ring, and May fell out a split second before Ashlee.

The American champions in these early tournaments will be the ones to watch
as they face over 40 international sumo athletes from all over the country
and the world in the third annual US SUMO OPEN on August 3!
