SUMO TOURNEY #1 SUMMARY
Sumo Tournament #1 featured some of America's top sumo wrestlers, including two US National champions, and several medalists from the 2002 US Sumo Open. The initial rounds were dramatic, but the competition really heated up in the openweight rounds.

Although half of the athletes were in the heavyweight class, not a single heavyweight made it to the openweight finals! In fact, lightweight US Champion Trent Sabo defeated middleweight US Champion Jack Keener in the semi-finals, to advance against Troy Collins in the finals. Middleweight Troy defeated Trent for the gold medal and a large bottle of premium sake!

Troy Collins, openweight bronze medalist at the 2002 US Sumo Open was truly a force to be reckoned with. Troy went undefeated, 7-0, capturing the middleweight and openeweight titles in the process!

Trent Sabo also staged major upsets, winning all his lightweight matches, and defeating two heavyweights in the openweight class. In fact, his only losses came against middleweights Joe Davis and Troy Collins.

One of the major rivalries was between Jack Keener of Orange County, and Asi Faoa, a UCLA student. Asi defeated Jack in the early heavyweight rounds, but Jack beat Asi in the heavyweight finals, by slapping down Asi at the initial charge. Asi also succumbed to Jack's strong belt techniques in the openweight third-place match. The upcoming encounters between Jack and Asi will be exciting to watch!
